The main subject of Erich Dal Canton’s photography is the concept of time and temporality, and the human experience that stems from it. In detail, Dal Canton captures locations and places of stillness or even stagnation that, for their part, seem to exist outside of time. In doing so, Dal Canton’s work process is being reflected in the resulting pictures. In regards to this, Erich Dal Canton makes use of light as a stylistic device. This fact is once again reflected in the Zurich-born photographers preferred analogue techniques—namely gelatine silver print and lith printing. Broadly speaking, the photographs may remind the viewer of the imagery themes of romanticism, as they oftentimes show depictions of nature and different ruinous conditions of varying degrees. However, for Dal Canton, his most important works are the ‚waterscapes‘ which mirror the photographer’s understanding of water as the overall source of all life.
