With his series Geflutete Kathedralen (Underwater cathedrals) Silvio Maraini makes previously hidden spaces and architectonical spheres visible to the viewer. Maraini’s images naturally bring about the question of their locality. This fact represents a first field of visual tension within the images. Silvio Maraini photographically captures underground water containers. As all of these water containers are being photographed by Maraini without water inside, they appear alienated to the viewer. This effect opens up a second field of visual tension, as the viewer encounters the presented spaced in a new and innovative way. This visual experience then may remind us of entering sacred spaces.
