Götter des Alltags

Every city is an encyclopedic discourse. To be looked up in the markets, in the rows of houses, and in the faces. Every shop is a book in its own language, open to anyone who is willing to read it, full of little things that tell of their authors and readers. Cristina Piza is a careful reader. Her understanding of images is archaic; she literally captures what she sees and reads in pictures. She sees the extraordinary in the ordinary, turning images into icons that the gods of everyday life display on their altars: the meat counter, the bread shop, the fish scales. The gods Cristina Piza conjures up know no prohibition on images. They are humble deities who carry their own relics and meet the photographer at eye level. Each of them carries their image within themselves, their individuality into the picture. There is a silent agreement between them and the photographer: there are no snapshots, no coincidences, only pure intention. The intention to depict everyday gods as they see themselves in the eye of the camera.

The exhibition is part of a project that Cristina Piza has been developing for several years in Naples about the city and its inhabitants. The selection for Photogalerie 94 is the essence of a comprehensive overview of the life, music, and culture of "Partenope."
